Planting a Tree

Just checked out the tree project at A Place Called Kindergarten. Jonelle Bell had left a comment after looking at our Tree Journal. It sounds like a great project that they had at her school. You might want to check it out.
We planted a new tree at our school last year. The kids raised the money by making and selling magnetic bookmarks from recycled cereal boxes, etc. They also made tooth fairy containers from old film canisters. It was a great lesson on reusing materials and all went to a new tree on the front lawn.

Has anyone else done a project like this? Or ... do you have an idea of another earth friendly project? Let us know and we'll make a list of ideas we can all use to make the world a better place.

Free Download of Writing and Spelling Data Binder and Portfolio Graphs

Here are some of the writing and spelling graphs and forms that we use in our classrooms to record writing progress throughout the year. We include these in our end of the year data binders and portfolios. Kindergarten uses a four point rubric and first and second grade uses a combined 16 point rubric. The graph for 100 spelling words are how we keep track of progress with high frequency words. The other spelling graph is for record of weekly tests. Everyone in the class doesn't have the same number of words but everyone can use the same graphs. If you have any questions about these pages please leave a comment and we will get back to you.

Seasonal Tree Journal Download

As a class we choose a tree at our school to be our "Kindergarten Tree". The tree is celebrated each season and during other special activities. We use this booklet throughout the year to record the observations we make and the fun we have. Actual photographs can be taken to be included in the booklet or students can draw their own interpretations. At the end of the year this booklet can be included in data binders or portfolios.

2010-2011 Scrapbooks For My Kindergarten Students

Front Cover of Scrapbook

Monthy Description

End of the Year Poem

Each year in kindergarten I make the students scrapbooks from fun events that we do throughout the year. As we said in an earlier post our theme at our school last year was Gardens for our whole building, so I did a Garden of Learning as my theme in kindergarten. After the cover, the first page is a document describing what we did in August/September. Then I took a picture of each individual student out by a flower garden on the first day of school, a picture of each student with their Chester hat on, and a picture of each student with their Johnny Appleseed hat on holding an apple that they brought to do math activities for the week. Then the next page is the October document followed by the October pictures of the pumpkin patch, our Storybook character parade, and our class picture of our Storybook character parade, our 50th day of school picture, and our class field trip to a park. I guess we did a TON of fun things in October. If you would like me to give more information on these fun events, just leave me a message!! The first photo I have given you is the front cover which was done with my Cricut machine and rub on letters. The second photo is the August/September document that I explain each month, and the last photo is a poem I put in called Your flower. It makes me cry each year!! The parents and kids LOVE these scrapbooks!!!

Free Repeated Tasks and New 2011-2012 Calendar Upload On TPT

Yesterday was a great day for us with blogging. We learned how to upload documents to our blog and TPT. We are now going through our files to see what is easiest for us to start sharing off of our computers since our rooms at school are being cleaned. Sue Beth has 37 pages to her 2011-2012 calendar for her 2011-2012 SMARTboard calendar this coming school year. I would love to buy it on TPT, but since I teach kindergarten in the same building I don't want to use the same things she does every day throughout the year. SueBeth is the best SMARTboard designer I have ever seen, so you might want to check our her entire year of SMARTboard calendar on our TPT website. I will upload a kindergarten version soon!! I just need her to fix some things for my calendar in kindergarten. We tried to give you thumbnail picture on our TPT website, but it didn't work. So if you actually click on the icon that says SMARTboard notebook to the left of the description it will show you some pages that she has designed. Take a peek, it is well worth the $5.
It was so exciting to see how many people have downloaded our repeated tasks for 2011-2012 school year. We left short little lines on some of the pages for your students to write in the dates. If you need any explaining to any of the pages as what goes on the lines, just ask. I typically make my pages into a separate book and SueBeth puts her pages into her Portfolios(Data Binders). They both are sent home at the end of the year and shared at conferences, IAT's, etc.
Other ideas that we plan on sharing in the next couple of days are our Portfolios(Data Binders) that we use. We have been using these Portfolios(Data Binders) for about 15 years. We have added some new things, but for the most part we have not had to change too much over the past 15 years. It is amazing how big they end up being at the end of the year to show the collection of learning that takes place throughout the year. The students love to share it with their families and can't wait to take them home. We promise that we will be using pictures by the end of this week!! We are just sorting through a lot of them to make sure that they don't contain any faces!!
I also do a kindergarten scrapbook and kindergarten memory book which I will share with you either later this week or next week. They turn out darling and the kids/parents just love these. Let's say that I love to scrapbook and do art projects so these 2 items end up being adorable that they even bring tears to my eyes!! So, yep you probably just figured out I am the "cutesy/artsy" person!! Everything of mine has to have some cutsey clipart added to it. I am not going to mention what my basement looks like or how many Cricuts and Cricut cartridges I own. I will never tell...well it's really I don't want to know how many I own!! I love all of the DJ Inkers, Digiwebstudio, Scrapindoodles,Lettering Delights etc. So watch out!!
Well enough information today, but keep stopping back!! New things and ideas daily that we are making or learning!!

Repeated Tasks

We use these repeated tasks as some of the items we include in the students' portfolios. They could also be printed and bound separately. The first three pages after the cover can be used with kindergarten and the other pages can easily be used with first and second graders. We typically do each of the pages four times a year (Aug/Sept, November, March and May). The 'Look at Me Now' page can be done monthly. These repeated tasks give a quick view of growth over the year. Students and parents enjoy seeing the record of progress.

Getting There With Some Bumps

We have been working hard on learning all of this blog stuff.  It is new to us on how to upload documents for you all to enjoy for your own classrooms.  However, we are running into some bumps on uploading this information for you!!  Hopefully we will get through to you tomorrow with some free downloads of somethings we want to share.  We are working on sharing some repeated tasks that we do 4 times a year at the kindergarten, first grade, and second grade level.  We will also add some pictures for you to be able to "see" how we put these together for the parents at the end of the year.  So, please hang in there and let others know about our blog that we will be sharing things with you hopefully tomorrow!!  If you happen to know how to upload and are willing to share just either leave a comment or email me!!
I have been working hard in my classroom this week organizing things.  Our daughter graduated last week from high school, so we worked like dogs getting ready for her party on Friday.  Now it is time to wrap up my classroom for this school year.
SueBeth's room was being cleaned today so she is going to be able to get into her room real soon!!  She is clear at the other end of the hall!!

Summer Time

Now that school is finished, we are ready to start blogging.  We are so excited to share things that we have used in our classrooms the past year.  Our ideas will cover primary grades due to the fact that Robynn teaches Kindergarten and SueBeth teaches Second Grade.  If you have any ideas/questions we will respond back to you as soon as we can.  Our building is a K-2 building and uses a theme each year for all grade levels.  Our theme last year was Garden of Learning and this coming year our theme will be Lighting The Way.  So, we are looking forward to sharing many ideas along to you!!  Please pass our blog along to others and we will see what kind of network we can build.
